The longer waits are not consistent across every version, however. That makes the storefront estimates more useful as a snapshot of specific configurations than as a definitive measure of demand.

Lead times reflect both the number of orders Apple receives and the inventory it allocated before launch, so they cannot be converted directly into unit sales. The iPhone 17 Pro Max also reached three-to-four-week delivery estimates last year, but it did so just one day after preorders opened. For the current generation, preorders began September 12, with availability beginning September 18.

Pu attributes the slower-looking start in part to relatively limited upgrades and higher prices. There is another potential factor: Apple’s iPhone Duo, described as the company’s first foldable iPhone, will open for preorders later. Buyers who might otherwise choose a Pro model could wait to see the foldable instead, making it too early to judge how interest will ultimately be divided across Apple’s fall lineup.
