Samsung SmartThings Adds Local Control and Matter 1.6 Support

Samsung SmartThings Adds Local Control and Matter 1.6 Support

For tablet and phone users managing a connected home, Samsung’s newest SmartThings update aims to make the app less dependent on both menu-diving and a working internet connection. SmartThings Now adds contextual cards to the top of the Home tab, while local control lets supported devices respond through a compatible hub on the same Wi-Fi network rather than routing every command through the cloud.

That local path could improve response times by about 30% versus cloud-based control, according to Samsung. More importantly, certain compatible lights, outlets, and other accessories can remain controllable when the home’s external internet connection is down. SmartThings automatically switches between local and cloud control as the user leaves or returns home.

A Home Screen That Surfaces Actions

SmartThings Now builds on Samsung’s recent Android interface refresh, which introduced compact cards and a floating navigation bar aligned with the company’s One UI design direction. The new feature uses Home Insight data and household context to suggest relevant actions instead of waiting for users to seek out a device control.

For example, Family Care may show a card suggesting a check-in or call if it detects no activity from an older family member for a period of time. As a user approaches home, SmartThings can suggest turning on lights or starting an air purifier, then offer to convert that action into an automated routine.

The app can also reorganize Favorites based on the prior week’s usage. An air conditioner may become less prominent as weather cools, while a more frequently used AirDresser can move forward. A separate Routine Insight view shows recently run automations and provides a way to remove routines that are no longer useful.

Supported Hubs and Expanded Matter Categories

Local control is available through the SmartThings Android and iOS apps when used with compatible hub hardware. It does not mean every SmartThings accessory will operate offline: support depends on both the hub and the controlled device.

  • SmartThings Station
  • SmartThings Hub V2
  • SmartThings Hub V3
  • SmartThings Hub V4
  • Samsung TVs that can operate as a SmartThings hub
  • Family Hub refrigerators that can operate as a SmartThings hub

The update also brings Matter 1.6 support to SmartThings, extending the categories of compatible connected-home hardware the platform can accommodate.

  • Energy meters for real-time consumption monitoring
  • Closures for certain doors and gates
  • Irrigation systems and sprinklers
  • Sensors that measure soil conditions

Samsung says SmartThings has reached 470 million registered users and supports more than 430 Works with SmartThings-certified brands. For people using a Galaxy tablet or phone as a household control screen, the practical appeal of this release is less about another interface card than the prospect of responsive, hub-based controls that can keep working when a cloud connection cannot.
